“Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty of Dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.”
It is one of the nine specialties of dentistry and a recognized international surgical specialty which includes the diagnosis and management of facial injuries, head and neck cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial disproportion, facial pain, impacted teeth, wisdom teeth, cysts and tumors of the jaws as well as numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections.
Procedures Performed by Oral Surgeons:
- Extraction of impacted and nonrestorable teeth (dentoalveolar surgery)
- Placement of dental implants. Depending on the condition of the jaw, bone grafting procedures may be required for proper placement of the implants in the jaw.
- Removal of cysts and tumours of the jaws.
- Perform corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery)
- Remove complex tumors (onocologic surgery)
- Reconstructive surgery may be necessary after traumatic dental injury or facial trauma or following the removal of a tumour or another operation.
- Perform cosmetic surgery of the face, jaws and neck.
- Facial injuries, management of complex craniofacial fractures and soft tissue injuries of the mouth, face and neck.
- Management of benign and malignant lesions of the salivary glands.
- Temporomandibular joint surgery.
- Cleft lip /palate surgery to correct the changes in facial structure caused by this birth defect.
- In addition to these common procedures, oral and maxillofacial surgeons may be called on to consult with cases of obstructive sleep apnea, facial pain and infection, biopsies and removal of lesions and diagnosis and treatment of some oral cancers.
