ORAL PROPHYLAXIS

ORAL PROPHYLAXIS
Oral Prophylaxis is a procedure performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. It is an important and effective dental treatment to keep the oral cavity in good health and also stop the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease (gum disease).
Gingivitis and periodontal disease are both caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque is a white to colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth and sticks to the teeth at the gum line and sometimes collects stains. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, which makes them turn red, swell and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces) to form.
Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums, which gradually destroy the support of the natural teeth. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds the teeth in place deteriorate. If it progresses and is not taken care of, will lead to tooth loss.
